Horizontal angle = 2 atan(w/(2f)), converted from radians to degrees. Horizontal crop factor = 36/w; equivalent focal length = f × 36/w. Use focal length f and active horizontal sensor width w in millimetres, not sensor diagonal or optical-format inch designation. This rectilinear geometric model excludes lens distortion, fisheye/anamorphic optics, focus breathing, finite-focus changes, stabilisation and digital crops unless reflected in active width. The 36 mm comparison matches horizontal framing only, not diagonal field, depth of field, exposure or image quality. Check the camera mode and lens data.

Methodology

How it works

Horizontal angle = 2 atan(w/(2f)), converted from radians to degrees. Horizontal crop factor = 36/w; equivalent focal length = f × 36/w. Use focal length f and active horizontal sensor width w in millimetres, not sensor diagonal or optical-format inch designation. This rectilinear geometric model excludes lens distortion, fisheye/anamorphic optics, focus breathing, finite-focus changes, stabilisation and digital crops unless reflected in active width. The 36 mm comparison matches horizontal framing only, not diagonal field, depth of field, exposure or image quality. Check the camera mode and lens data.

Frequently asked questions

Does a crop factor change the real focal length?

No. It compares horizontal framing with a 36 mm-wide reference. A 50 mm lens and 36 mm active width give about 39.597753°; the same lens on 18 mm width gives about 20.407947° and a 100 mm horizontal equivalent.
