Rolling Shutter Skew

Estimate horizontal top-to-bottom displacement from sensor readout time and image motion.

Full-frame readout time (ms): 0–100; Horizontal image motion (px/s): -100000–100000; Image width (px, integer): 1–16384

Assumes a top-to-bottom rolling scan and constant horizontal image motion. Displacement = readout time / 1000 × motion; percentage = 100 × displacement / image width. Use the first-to-last-row readout time for the actual recording mode, not shutter exposure or frame duration. Positive motion means rightward; negative means leftward. Zero readout models a global shutter. Motion and width must use the same pixel scale, before resizing or stabilization. This linear estimate excludes acceleration, rotation, perspective changes, motion blur, wobble and correction processing; it is not a camera quality rating.

Frequently asked questions

Does a faster shutter remove the skew?

A shorter exposure reduces motion blur but does not by itself shorten the sensor readout. Use the measured or specified readout time for the exact recording mode.
