Noise Gate Margin

Compare a noise gate’s opening threshold, hysteresis and measured detector noise before setting up a channel.

Opening threshold (dBFS): -120–0; Hysteresis width (dB): 0–40; Detector noise level (dBFS): -160–0

Noise Gate Margin

Opening threshold (dBFS): -30 Hysteresis width (dB): 6 Detector noise level (dBFS): -50

Closing threshold (dBFS)

Noise below closing threshold (dB)

Closing threshold = opening threshold − hysteresis width. Noise margin = closing threshold − measured detector noise. Positive margin means noise is below the closing threshold; negative means it is above; zero is exactly on the boundary. Use matching dBFS references and the same detector, sidechain filtering and peak/RMS convention. Increasing hysteresis lowers the closing threshold and reduces this margin. This is a level comparison, not a prediction of current gate state or noise reduction: attack, hold, release, knee, range, detector fluctuations and device-specific boundary rules are excluded. Confirm with listening and the actual gate meter.

How it works

Frequently asked questions

Does positive margin guarantee clean gating?

No. Peaks can cross the thresholds, timing affects closure and the desired signal may also be cut. Measure the processed detector signal and confirm settings on the actual device; this tool does not model its algorithm.
