Camera hyperfocal distance
Estimate a focus distance from actual focal length, f-number and a chosen blur-circle limit.
Actual focal length (mm): 1–1000; Aperture (f-number): 0.7–64; Circle of confusion limit (mm): 0.001–0.1

Ideal thin-lens convention: H = f² / (N × c) + f, with focal length f and chosen circle-of-confusion diameter c in mm, and f-number N. Divide H by 1000 for metres and by 0.3048 for feet. Distance is referenced to the front principal plane, which need not match the camera’s focus-distance marks. Enter f 1–1000 mm, N 0.7–64 and c 0.001–0.1 mm, including fractions. Use actual focal length, not a full-frame equivalent. The 0.03 mm example is a chosen blur criterion, not a universal recommendation; choose it for the image format, output size and viewing conditions. This estimates the focus setting whose far acceptable-blur limit reaches infinity; sharpness remains conditional on c. It excludes diffraction, aberrations, focus breathing, lens calibration and real depth-of-field measurement. Verify the lens and recorded image; this is not a sharpness guarantee. Display uses six decimals without intermediate rounding.

Frequently asked questions
Why include the extra focal length?
This tool uses the stated thin-lens H = f²/(Nc) + f convention. Some tables approximate it as f²/(Nc). Compare formulas and distance reference points before comparing results.
