Each universe has 512 channels. End address = start address + fixture footprint − 1. Fixtures are assigned in group order; a fixture that does not fit moves intact to address 1 of the next universe. Channels before the starting address and unused tails remain unassigned, not reserved. This creates a new sequential patch and does not detect equipment already patched on site. Universe numbers are planning labels starting at 1; confirm console and network numbering before use.

Methodology

How it works

Each universe has 512 channels. End address = start address + fixture footprint − 1. Fixtures are assigned in group order; a fixture that does not fit moves intact to address 1 of the next universe. Channels before the starting address and unused tails remain unassigned, not reserved. This creates a new sequential patch and does not detect equipment already patched on site. Universe numbers are planning labels starting at 1; confirm console and network numbering before use.

Frequently asked questions

Which channel count should I enter?

Use the footprint of the exact DMX mode selected on each fixture, from its manual. Different modes can use different channel counts. Match the mode and start address on the fixture and console.

Can I patch across universes or keep existing addresses?

A fixture never spans universes. Reordering groups recalculates every address. This planner does not import an existing patch, allocate protocol ports or configure hardware. Confirm the plan against the console before applying it.
