Define reverb and delay
Reverb models or creates many closely spaced reflections. Its main controls commonly include type, pre-delay, decay time, room or plate character, damping, and tone. The result can place a source in an apparent space or add sustain without a clearly separated echo.
Delay stores the signal and plays it later. Delay time controls the space before a repeat; feedback returns part of the delayed output to the input to create further repeats. Tempo synchronization can express delay time as musical note values.

The categories overlap: a very short delay can thicken a source, and some reverbs contain audible early reflections. Choose the outcome you need rather than the label on a preset.
Compare the musical jobs
Use reverb when the mix needs a shared sense of space or a smooth tail. A short room or plate can add presence without turning every phrase into a long wash. Longer decays can suit sparse arrangements but may obscure lyrics in a reflective venue.
Use delay when repeats should support rhythm or fill gaps between phrases. A single short repeat can add depth; a tempo-related delay can create an audible pattern; a manually ridden “throw” can affect only selected words.
Start from the room
The venue already contributes reverberation. An effect that works in headphones may become indistinct through the PA and room. During soundcheck:
- listen from the audience area, not only in solo or headphones;
- begin with shorter times and lower returns;
- check consonants, phrase endings, and quiet passages;
- test the full band, because masking changes with the arrangement;
- walk coverage zones before deciding that the effect is too dry or wet.

Route effects on a mixer
A common live workflow sends a copy of one or more input channels to an FX bus, processes that bus, and returns only the effected signal to the mix:
Input channel → post-fader FX send → reverb or delay → 100% wet FX return → main mix
The dry source remains on its input channel. Setting a shared return to 100% wet avoids adding a second dry copy through the effect path. Use the send level to decide how much each source feeds the effect and the return fader to control the combined effect in the destination.
Post-fader sends are the usual starting point because effect level follows the source fader. A pre-fader send can be intentional—for an independent monitor effect or a special transition—but it can keep feeding after the dry channel is lowered. Label that exception clearly. Keep effects out of the wrong destination
Confirm whether the effect belongs in mains, monitors, broadcast, recording, fills, or another mix. Vocalists may request some reverb in IEMs even when the FOH effect changes by room. Use separate buses or returns when destinations need independent control; do not assume the main return should feed every output.
Filter and EQ the return to keep unnecessary low-frequency energy and harsh repeats from occupying the mix. Make changes by listening in context rather than copying universal cutoff values.
Build a repeatable workflow
- Start with returns down or muted and confirm the dry source is healthy.
- Choose one purpose: space, sustain, thickening, rhythmic repeat, or a cue-specific throw.
- Select a simple preset and set the shared return to fully wet.
- Route the correct input through a post-fader FX send.
- Raise the return gradually while listening from the audience area.
- Set reverb decay or delay time for the song and room; use tap tempo when repeats must follow performance tempo.
- Set delay feedback conservatively and confirm it cannot self-oscillate unexpectedly.
- Filter the return and check lyric intelligibility with the full arrangement.
- Verify mutes, scene recalls, monitor feeds, talkback, recordings, and song transitions.
- Save the show file and record any cue that requires manual timing.
For a delay throw, keep the normal send low or muted and raise it only on rehearsed words. Confirm whether the console scene, automation, or engineer owns the cue. A performance-dependent effect needs a fallback if tap tempo, MIDI, playback, or show-control data is unavailable.

Describe the outcome and control boundary instead of demanding a specific plugin when an equivalent console effect will work. If the artist carries an external processor, document its analog or digital I/O, sample rate where relevant, power, rack position, insert/send route, wet/dry state, and backup plan.
Common mistakes
Adding effects before fixing the dry source. Reverb and delay multiply noise, sibilance, distortion, and timing problems.
Returning dry signal from a shared FX bus. The original channel already carries the dry source.
Using long tails in a reflective room. Added decay can reduce intelligibility even when it sounds attractive in solo.
Sending FOH effects everywhere. Monitors, streams, recordings, and fills may need different balances or no return.
Leaving delay feedback uncontrolled. High feedback can build into a loud repeating loop; rehearse mutes and safe limits.
