XLR vs TRS Cables: Which Connection Should You Use?

TL;DR — XLR and 1/4-inch TRS can both carry one balanced analog audio channel when the connected equipment supports it. XLR latches and is standard for stage microphones and many professional handoffs; TRS is compact and common on line inputs, outputs, headphones, and inserts. Neither connector is automatically better or proof of signal type. Match the source, destination, level, wiring, and required channel count, then document both ends.

XLR, TRS, and TS at a glance

TRS means tip-ring-sleeve. TS means tip-sleeve. XLR names a connector family; three-pin XLR is the familiar audio version.
One balanced analog channel uses two signal conductors plus a shield. A TRS headphone connection uses the contacts differently for unbalanced left, right, and common return. The plugs may look identical while carrying different formats.
When XLR is the practical choice
XLR is common for stage microphones and microphone-level stage-box inputs because it:
- has distinct male and female cable ends;
- usually latches into the socket;
- is rugged and familiar to production crews;
- supports balanced analog audio and phantom power when correctly wired;
- is standard across microphone snakes and stage racks.
XLR is also used for balanced line-level console outputs, powered speakers, and equipment handoffs. Therefore XLR alone is incomplete. A console input needs to know whether the source is microphone level, line level, analog, or a supported digital format.
Do not connect equipment merely because both sockets are XLR. Confirm signal direction and specification.
When TRS is the practical choice
Balanced TRS is common for compact line-level inputs and outputs on:
- audio interfaces;
- keyboards and synthesizers;
- rack processors;
- small mixers;
- monitor controllers;
- headphone amplifiers.
TRS also appears on unbalanced stereo headphone outputs and insert points. A label such as L/Mono, Balanced, Phones, or Insert changes the meaning of the socket.
For stage use, confirm whether the plug is secure and protected from accidental removal. A non-latching TRS connection at a performer’s pedalboard may need strain relief and a clear cable path.
TS is a different connection
TS is typical for electric guitar, bass, and pedal signals. Replacing a TS instrument cable with TRS does not turn the instrument output into a balanced signal. Use the cable type intended by the equipment manufacturer.

Adapters and XLR-to-TRS cables
An XLR-to-TRS cable can correctly connect a balanced output to a compatible balanced input. It can also connect incompatible equipment if chosen without checking.
Before using one, confirm:
- source connector and output wiring;
- destination connector and input wiring;
- analog or digital format;
- microphone, instrument, line, or headphone level;
- balanced or unbalanced circuit;
- male/female direction;
- phantom-power implications;
- mono or stereo channel count.
An adapter changes the physical connector. It does not automatically change level, impedance, balancing, or digital format.
Stereo requires two balanced channels
For a keyboard with balanced left and right TRS outputs, use two balanced console channels. A single TRS plug can carry stereo only when both devices expect an unbalanced stereo connection, such as a headphone path.
Phantom power
Phantom power is normally delivered through a balanced microphone connection to compatible devices. Do not assume it should be present on a line output or adapter cable. Assign phantom-power control to the responsible engineer and document devices that need it.
How to document connector handoffs
Write both ends and the signal type:

Add provider responsibility, length only when operationally necessary, and the matching input number. Avoid:

On the stage plot, show the source, DI or interface, and destination. Keep detailed pinout or device-specific notes in a connection table.
Common connector mistakes
Assuming XLR sounds better. Compatible balanced XLR and TRS connections can carry the same type of analog signal; equipment design and correct interfacing matter more than connector shape.
Calling every TRS cable stereo. It may carry balanced mono or an insert.
Using one cable for a balanced stereo source. Stereo balanced audio normally needs two channels.
Ignoring level. XLR and TRS can carry microphone or line-related signals depending on the equipment.
Adapting a guitar directly to XLR. A passive instrument commonly needs an appropriate DI, not only a plug adapter.

Is XLR better than TRS?
Not inherently. Both can carry balanced analog audio. XLR’s latch and stage-standard form make it practical for microphones and stage boxes; TRS is compact and common for line I/O. Use the connector and wiring the equipment specifies.
Do XLR and TRS sound the same?
When both carry a compatible balanced analog signal between properly designed equipment, the connector type alone should not be treated as a tone control. Cable condition, length, shielding, source, and input design still matter.
Is TRS always balanced?
No. TRS may carry balanced mono, unbalanced stereo headphones, an insert send/return, or another device-specific connection.
Can you connect TRS to XLR?
Yes when the source and destination have compatible signal type, level, and balanced wiring. Confirm direction and phantom-power conditions. The cable does not convert an incompatible signal.
What is the difference between TS and TRS?
TS has tip and sleeve contacts and commonly carries unbalanced mono instrument audio. TRS adds a ring contact and may carry balanced mono, unbalanced stereo, or an insert connection.
