Choose the quartet formation

A string quartet normally contains:

  • Violin 1;
  • Violin 2;
  • Viola;
  • Cello.

The players may choose a semicircle, a more open arc, or another arrangement based on communication, repertoire, sightlines, acoustics, and production context. Ask the quartet which formation they use rather than copying an orchestra template.

Use stable labels on the plot and input list. Vln 1, Violin I, and a performer’s name should not become three unrelated identities.

Mark the audience direction and the ensemble’s visual centre. If there is a conductor, featured vocalist, piano, playback, or additional performer, the act is no longer only the four-seat template; add the real sources and sightlines.

Draw chairs, stands, and working space

Each player needs more than a chair icon. Draw:

  • four armless chairs or the artist-carried seating;
  • music stands and shared-score arrangements;
  • cello endpin area and floor protection if required;
  • bowing width;
  • instrument stands when used;
  • microphone stands, stereo bars, or floor mounts;
  • cable routes;
  • entry and exit;
  • riser edge or floor-level boundary;
  • conductor or cue sightline.

Chairs

State chair type, quantity, provider, and any genuine height requirement. Avoid padded arms that restrict bow movement. The cellist may need a stable chair and an appropriate endpin solution for the floor surface.

Music stands

Confirm whether each player uses an individual stand or players share by desk. A quartet often needs four, but the score and ensemble preference decide the number. Record stand lights separately, including power or battery ownership.

Footprint

Do not pack seats until the icons fit. Check bows at full reach, page turns, microphone booms, stand bases, cables, and safe access. If the quartet shares a riser with another act, show the measured usable area and changeover route.

There is no universal “best” quartet microphone method. Room acoustics, audience distance, stage noise, PA, monitor level, recording needs, and available microphones affect the design. Let the responsible engineer approve placement.

Pickups and DIs

If the players carry pickups or instrument microphones, list the exact preamp/output path. State whether the artist supplies the clip, cable, preamp, and DI. Never attach a clip or mount to an instrument without the musician’s approval.

Shared microphones

Draw the stand and microphone position relative to all four players. A shared pair needs an uncluttered acoustic path and may capture more stage and room sound than close sources. Do not promise isolation in a noisy event environment.

Wedges can add stage level and interact with open microphones. IEMs require their own delivery and listening plan. State the actual destination and let the engineer set safe levels in the room.

Lighting and page reading

  • camera or sightline constraints.

Do not assume a general stage wash makes printed music readable.

Changeover
