What the riser note must communicate
A drum riser is a raised platform supporting the drum kit, drummer, seating, microphones, stands, cables, and sometimes a monitor or playback equipment. A useful requirement lets production determine whether the platform fits, can be supplied safely, and can move through the intended changeover.
The stage plot should answer:
- Where is the riser relative to stage left, stage right, upstage, and downstage?
- What usable width, depth, and height does the artist need?
- Which way do the drummer and kit face?
- Where do stairs or other approved access meet the platform?
- Which equipment sits on the platform?
- Where do microphone, power, monitor, and data cables leave it?
- Does the riser stay fixed, roll, or move by another agreed method?
- Who supplies, assembles, inspects, moves, and approves it?
Do not use standard drum riser as the entire note. There is no single standard size, height, construction, access arrangement, or safe working load for every show.
Measure the complete drum footprint
Measure the setup in playing position before requesting a platform. The shell footprint alone is too small because cymbal stands, microphone booms, the throne, pedals, the drummer's movement, and cable connections extend beyond it.
Measurement sequence
- Set up the exact touring or requested kit on a flat floor.
- Put the throne, pedals, hi-hat, cymbals, electronics, laptop, and side snare in playing position.
- Add microphone stands, clips, looms, power supplies, and any drum fill or personal mixer that will share the platform.
- Measure the outer working width and depth.
- Add only the edge allowance and access space validated for the production.
- Test that the drummer can enter, sit, play, adjust hardware, and leave without stepping across an unsafe gap or cable bundle.
Record which configuration you measured. A compact club kit, a two-kick touring kit, and a hybrid acoustic/electronic rig can require different footprints even when each is described as a drum kit.
Usable size versus nominal size
Ask for usable platform dimensions. Deck hardware, rails, stairs, lips, joined sections, or nearby equipment can reduce the clear area available to the kit.

Draw the riser on the stage plot
Place the riser before placing the drum icons. Its outline establishes the working boundary for the kit.
On the stage plot, show:
- a solid, clearly labeled platform outline;
- usable width × depth beside the outline;
- finished height;
- audience direction and stage orientation;
- each drum, cymbal position, throne, electronics station, and large stand;
- stairs or the agreed access point;
- any edge protection that affects the usable area;
- input, power, monitor, and cable-exit locations;
- wheel direction or offstage parking position if it rolls;
- nearby backline, scenic items, support-act gear, and clear routes.

Connect it to the input list
Keep drum source names consistent between the plot and input list. If the plot says Rack Tom 1, do not rename it High Tom in the channel table without a deliberate change.
For a pre-wired or rolling riser, also identify:
- stage-box or sub-snake location;
- channel range or loom ID;
- disconnect point;
- phantom-power and patch responsibility;
- cable service loop needed for movement;
- what is disconnected before the platform moves.

The rider communicates requirements; it does not certify a platform or replace the provider's engineering, manufacturer instructions, venue rules, or local requirements.
Define the fallback
If a raised platform is preferred rather than essential, say what happens when it cannot be supplied. A fallback might be a tested floor-level layout or a smaller kit configuration with an explicit minimum usable footprint.
Do not invent a compact fallback on show day. Draw it, measure it, and confirm that the drummer, microphones, monitors, and cable paths still work.
Plan access, cables, and safety
Platform access and edge arrangements depend on the riser height, performer needs, venue rules, staging system, and risk assessment. Ask the venue or qualified provider to confirm the required stairs, handrails, guardrails, toe boards, ramps, locks, and other controls.
The drawing should preserve:
- a clear entry and exit for the drummer;
- safe access for tuning and microphone placement;
- clearance around stairs and platform edges;
- emergency and backstage routes;
- a managed route for microphone, power, and data cables;
- space for crew to disconnect or reconnect without reaching through moving equipment.
Never route a loose loom across a stair, leave wheels unbraked in show position, remove required edge protection for sightlines, or assume a performer can step onto an unfamiliar height safely.
Load information
Give the provider an honest equipment inventory: people, drum kit, hardware, backline, monitors, racks, and other items expected on the platform. Do not guess a structural capacity or certify the platform yourself. The venue or staging provider must select, assemble, and approve a system suitable for the actual loads and operating conditions.
Prepare a rolling-riser changeover
A rolling drum riser can reduce changeover work only when the entire route and handoff are designed in advance.
Confirm:
- the assembled platform fits in its offstage parking position;
- the complete height and width clear doors, wings, masking, truss legs, and cable ramps;
- the route has a suitable surface and no unplanned level change;
- wheels, brakes, steering, and push points suit the supplied platform;
- loose hardware is secured before movement;
- audio, power, data, and monitor connections have labeled disconnect points;
- the stage destination is marked;
- enough assigned crew are present;
- one stage manager calls the move;
- the platform is positioned, braked, inspected, reconnected, and line-checked before use.

Common drum-riser mistakes
Sizing from drum shells only. Stands, throne, microphones, electronics, and movement define the working footprint.
Giving dimensions without units. Write one declared unit system and include width, depth, and height.
Drawing stairs outside the stage boundary. Access consumes real space and can collide with backline or routes.
Calling a platform rolling without a route. Wheels do not solve door clearance, level changes, cables, staffing, or parking.
Leaving provider responsibility blank. Production cannot source or inspect an unnamed handoff.
Treating a stage plot as structural approval. The drawing shows operational intent; the qualified provider confirms the platform.
