Learn when to use a pad instead of lowering gain, where microphone, DI, and mixer pads act, and how to document attenuation in a live sound rider.

Understand pad versus gain

An audio pad is an attenuator: it reduces signal level before the next stage. A gain or preamp control changes how much amplification that stage applies. Both affect the level seen later in the signal path, but they do not solve the same problem.

If a mixer preamp overloads while its gain is already at minimum, lowering a channel fader cannot repair that distortion because the fader is downstream. Engaging the input pad gives the preamp a lower signal to handle. Yamaha describes this exact use: apply a pad when a mixer input remains too loud or distorted with gain fully down. The amount varies by device, so read the label or manual rather than assuming one universal value.

Find where the overload starts

Distortion and a high meter reading are clues, not a diagnosis. Trace the signal in order:

Source → microphone or instrument output → DI → stage I/O → preamp → channel processing → buses → system output

Ask where the signal first becomes damaged. If a condenser microphone distorts internally on a very loud source, its own pad may help even when the console meter looks moderate. If the microphone is clean but the console preamp clips at minimum gain, the mixer pad is the relevant control. If the DI input overloads, the DI pad or a lower source output may be required.

Do not engage every available pad at once. Stacked attenuation can force excessive gain later, increasing noise and hiding which boundary was actually overloaded.

Distinguish overload from other faults

Before changing pads, confirm:

  • the source is connected to an appropriate mic, line, or instrument input;
  • the cable and connector wiring are correct;
  • phantom power and DI configuration match the devices;
  • EQ, compressor makeup gain, inserts, and bus processing are not creating a later overload;
  • the performer is producing realistic show-level peaks.

Choose the correct pad

Use the earliest pad needed to keep the next circuit clean.

Microphone pad

Use a microphone's pad when its internal electronics overload on the acoustic source. Typical candidates are high-output microphones very close to drums, brass, or loud amplifiers, but source type alone is not proof. Listen and test the exact microphone at performance level.

DI pad

A DI may offer one or more input attenuation settings. Confirm what the manufacturer intends each position to accept; a pad marked for a speaker-level input is not automatically appropriate for every DI or amplifier connection. Start from the normal input mode and add only enough attenuation to keep the DI clean.

Mixer input pad

Use the console pad when the signal presented to the preamp clips with gain at minimum. Yamaha's Using Pads in Live Sound recommends first testing with the pad off, then engaging it only when the input remains overloaded and resetting gain afterward.

Inline pad

An inline attenuator can solve a defined level mismatch when neither device offers a suitable control. Verify its attenuation, impedance, phantom-power behavior, connector direction, and suitability for the signal. It should be a documented system component, not an unlabeled adapter discovered during line check.

Set the input safely

  1. Pull down or mute affected destinations and protect listeners and loudspeakers.
  2. Confirm the source, connector, input type, and intended signal level.
  3. Set optional pads off and preamp gain low.
  4. Ask for realistic performance-level peaks, not a quiet rehearsal signal.
  5. Meter and listen at the earliest available point, commonly PFL or a preamp meter.
  6. If that input stays clean, raise gain to the console manufacturer's recommended operating range with useful headroom.
  7. If it clips at minimum gain, engage the appropriate upstream pad.
  8. Reset gain after the level drops; do not leave the channel under-driven.
  9. Recheck the complete path, including processing, buses, record feeds, monitors, and PA outputs.
  10. Save and document the confirmed state.

Meter scales and reference points differ between consoles. Do not copy a target number from another model. Use the exact console documentation, keep its clip indication inactive, and leave margin for real peaks.

Document pads in the rider

Record a pad only when it is a repeatable requirement or an important starting state. Useful fields include:

Use the value printed by the actual device; do not write merely PAD when several attenuation settings exist. Note who may change it, especially where FOH and monitors share a preamp. Keep the input-list name aligned with the patch sheet and save console state after verification.

Common mistakes

Using the fader to cure preamp clipping. The damaged signal already exists before the fader.

Leaving pads on from a previous act. The next source may become unnecessarily noisy when gain is raised to compensate.

Treating every pad as equivalent. Microphone, DI, inline, and console pads act at different boundaries and may have different electrical requirements.

Testing at conversation level. A setting that passes a quiet line check may overload during the first loud transient.

Copying a fixed attenuation value. Pad values and circuit locations vary by device and input mode.

FAQ

What does the pad switch do on a mixer?

Is a pad the same as gain?
