What a DI box does

A direct box—usually shortened to DI—is an interface between a source such as an instrument and a microphone input on a mixing console. A conventional instrument DI accepts an unbalanced, high-impedance signal and provides a balanced, low-impedance mic-level output.

That conversion solves several practical stage problems:

  • the instrument can connect to a console microphone input;
  • the balanced output is better suited to a long stage-to-console cable;
  • the source sees an input designed for its electrical characteristics;
  • a transformer-isolated DI may help separate ground paths;
  • a thru output can feed an onstage amplifier while the console receives a direct signal.

A DI is not simply an adapter that changes a 1/4-inch plug into XLR. Connector shape, signal level, impedance, balancing, isolation, and power all matter.

Which sources use a DI

Do not select a DI from the instrument name alone. A keyboard with balanced XLR outputs has a different requirement from one with unbalanced 1/4-inch outputs. An artist-carried acoustic preamp may already provide a balanced XLR output. A powered modeler may send balanced line level directly.

Trace the actual output connector, nominal level, and destination. The appropriate interface may be an instrument DI, multimedia DI, line-isolation box, or direct console input.

Active vs passive DI boxes

Passive DI

A passive DI uses a transformer and does not require a battery or phantom power. It can provide electrical isolation and is often suitable for active sources with healthy output level. Transformer quality and source/load interaction affect performance, so “passive” does not mean every model behaves identically.

Active DI

An active DI contains powered electronics. Power may come from phantom power, a battery, or an external supply, depending on the model. Its input can be useful for passive pickups that need a high input impedance.

The correct choice depends on:

  • source type and output level;
  • pickup impedance;
  • required headroom;
  • isolation needs;
  • available power;
  • number of mono or stereo channels;
  • connector and thru requirements.

Do not turn “active for passive instruments, passive for active instruments” into an absolute rule. It is a useful starting pattern, but the actual device specifications and source determine compatibility.

Inputs, thru outputs, pads, and ground lifts

Input and output

The DI input receives the source. Its balanced XLR output normally goes to a console microphone input through the stage box. Stereo sources need two DI channels unless the performance intentionally uses a mono output.

Thru output

A thru or link output passes the instrument signal to another device, commonly an amplifier. Document whether the artist needs both the DI feed and an amp microphone; they become separate console inputs.

Pad

A pad reduces level before the DI electronics or transformer to help accommodate a high-output source. Use the device manufacturer’s instructions and set it during line check. Do not write a generic pad value into every rider.

Ground lift

A ground-lift switch may disconnect an audio shield path to address a ground-loop hum, depending on the DI design. It is not permission to remove the protective earth from mains equipment. Never use an unsafe power adapter or disconnect electrical safety grounding to solve audio noise.

How to document a DI

Show the DI at the real source position on the stage plot and use a matching input-list row.

Replace “confirm” before the final advance closes. Record:

  • source name;
  • input connector and output level;
  • mono or stereo channel count;
  • artist- or venue-supplied DI;
  • active or passive model when relevant;
  • power or phantom requirement;
  • thru destination;
  • pad or isolation requirement only when justified;
  • console channel.

Common DI mistakes

Writing only “DI.” State the source, number of channels, provider, connector, and power requirement.

Using one DI for a stereo source. Left and right normally require two channels.

Assuming every XLR output is mic level. Check the device documentation and console input capability.

Lifting mains safety earth. Use approved audio isolation and qualified technical support; never defeat protective grounding.

Forgetting the amp feed. If a musician needs a thru connection or an amp microphone, show the complete path.
