Create a keyboard stage plot that documents instrument positions, mono or stereo outputs, DIs, stands, pedals, monitor mixes, power, and input-list channels.

Choose the keyboard rig you are documenting

Keyboard setups range from one compact instrument to multi-tier rigs with a laptop, audio interface, pedalboard, submixer, and several audio outputs. Count the equipment that will actually arrive before drawing the plot.

Record these facts first:

  • number and model or role of keyboards;
  • single-tier, two-tier, or separate stands;
  • seated or standing performance position;
  • mono, stereo, or multiple output pairs;
  • direct outputs or an artist-provided submixer;
  • sustain, expression, patch-change, and volume pedals;
  • laptop, interface, or hardware module locations;
  • artist-provided and venue-provided equipment.

The model name can help identify the rig, but it does not replace connection details. Production still needs the selected outputs, connectors, channel count, and provider assignments.

Draw the keyboard setup in six steps

1. Place the player and show orientation

Draw the keyboard footprint from above and add an audience arrow. Show which direction the player faces. A rig placed perpendicular to the audience occupies a different lane and sends cables in a different direction from a rig placed across the stage.

Use a stable label such as Alex — keys + backing vocal rather than “keyboard.” If the player also sings, place the vocal microphone, boom direction, and input number where the performer can reach them without blocking the keys.

Stage position is a production choice. It should support sightlines to the musical director, drummer, conductor, or other cue source while preserving safe access around stands and cables. The plot communicates the chosen arrangement; the venue confirms what fits the actual stage.

2. Draw every keyboard, tier, and stand

Show whether keyboards share a two-tier stand or use separate stands. Label the instruments Upper keys and Lower keys, or use short model names if those names remain stable throughout the paperwork.

Include the bench or stool when seated, plus its provider. Mark separate laptop stands, music stands, controller surfaces, rack modules, and pedalboards. These objects affect footprint and changeover even when they do not create audio channels.

If the venue supplies a keyboard stand, request the required type and capacity during the advance. “Keyboard stand” is too vague when the show depends on a second tier, a specific playing height, or space for pedals.

3. Choose and label the audio outputs

Decide whether each instrument sends mono, stereo, or separate program outputs. Then give every delivered output a channel number. Common arrangements include:

These are documentation patterns, not mandatory configurations. Use the routing that matches the programmed sounds and production plan. If an output jack is labeled L/Mono, state whether the show uses that mono path or a stereo pair.

4. Specify DIs, connectors, and providers

For each output, state the connector at the handoff point and who supplies any DI, isolation device, or adapter. Do not assume the venue knows whether the instrument uses unbalanced 1/4-inch outputs, balanced line outputs, XLR outputs from a submixer, or an audio interface.

Useful rider language is concrete:

  • Artist provides keyboard and two 1/4-inch cables; venue provides two suitable DIs.
  • Artist submixer provides balanced XLR L/R at the keyboard position.
  • Upper keyboard runs mono from L/Mono output to artist-provided DI.

5. Add pedals and cable paths

Draw a compact pedal area below the instrument and label important functions when they affect setup: sustain, expression, patch change, rotary speed, or volume. You do not need a separate symbol for every small pedal, but the plot should reserve the floor space and keep signal and power cables away from the player's feet.

Show the approximate route from keyboard outputs or submixer to the stage box. Keep the route clear of the bench, stand legs, and the player's access path. Qualified stage staff determine the final cable placement and secure it for the venue.

6. Mark power and monitor destination

Place power beside the equipment that needs it: keyboards, laptop supplies, interfaces, submixers, and powered USB hubs. State which distribution the artist carries and identify the required outlet location. Do not specify venue electrical work or unsafe daisy chains.

Add the player's monitor type and mix number. Examples include Mix 3 — Keys — wedge or Mix 4 — Keys — wired IEM. Replace the generic output descriptions with balanced or unbalanced status when known from the actual instrument and selected output path. If mono operation is acceptable as a fallback, record that agreement in the notes.

The artist controls the balance between keyboards in this example, so FOH receives one combined stereo source. That simplifies the venue channel count but gives the house engineer less control over individual instruments. Confirm that tradeoff with the production before choosing it.

Independent outputs give FOH separate control but use more input channels and DIs. The stage plot and input list should make that channel cost visible before the show.

Decide between mono, stereo, and a submixer

There is no single correct keyboard output format. Choose according to the programmed sounds, available inputs, stage system, and importance of stereo information.

Use mono when simplicity is the priority

A mono output uses one channel, one input path, and usually one DI. It can be practical for compact systems or sounds that do not depend on stereo movement or width. Test the actual keyboard patches in mono before specifying it; combining outputs without checking can change balances or phase relationships.

Use stereo when the program depends on it

Stereo piano samples, rotary effects, delays, and layered patches may be designed around two channels. Label the pair consistently and keep both paths matched. The engineer still decides how the stereo source fits the room and audience coverage.

Do not write “stereo preferred” without defining the fallback. State whether mono from the instrument's L/Mono output is acceptable, whether a different patch will be used, or whether two channels are a firm show requirement.

Use a submixer when the artist owns the internal balance

A submixer can combine several keyboards, modules, and software instruments into one mono or stereo handoff. Document who controls it, where it sits, and which outputs the venue receives. If the submixer also feeds the player's monitor, draw that local path separately from the venue monitor return.

The submixer should not hide important show information. The venue still needs the final connectors, output labels, power, physical location, and troubleshooting contact.

Plan monitors, movement, and changeover

Keyboard rigs often combine a wide footprint with a dense group of stands and cables. Use the plot to prevent avoidable setup conflicts.

Keep the monitor clear of pedals

Place a wedge where the player can hear it without blocking pedal access or the bench. If the rig uses IEMs, show the pack or wired connection location and remove an unnecessary wedge request. Label the mix by performer, not by an ambiguous instrument number.

Preserve sightlines and exits

Check sightlines from the playing position, not only from the front of the stand. The player may need to see the drummer, musical director, or stage manager while using two tiers. Leave a clear route into the playing position and avoid trapping the bench between cables and backline.

Make the rig changeover-ready

State what arrives prewired. A loom with labeled keys L/R, vocal, monitor return, and power can shorten identification time, while loose stands and unmarked adapters create uncertainty. Use labels that match the input list.

For festival or support-slot shows, include:

  • assembled footprint and approximate setup order;
  • whether the keyboards travel in separate cases;
  • artist-carried stand, bench, loom, and power distribution;
  • rolling riser compatibility if relevant and confirmed;
  • line-check sequence for every output and pedal-controlled level;
  • the approved reduced setup, if one exists.

Common keyboard stage plot mistakes

Drawing one keyboard symbol for a two-tier rig. Show every instrument, tier, stand, and the real footprint.

Writing “stereo DI” without assigning channels. Stereo normally requires two labeled audio paths; list both and state who provides the connection equipment.

Omitting pedals. Reserve a clear pedal area so stand legs, power, and cables do not occupy it.

Requesting power with no location. Mark outlets beside the keyboard rig and list artist-carried distribution.

Hiding several sources behind “keys.” Name upper, lower, software, module, or submixer outputs so troubleshooting starts from a shared map.

Forgetting the vocal position. A keyboard player's vocal boom must reach around the instrument without blocking keys, sightlines, or access.

  • Player name, position, facing direction, and audience direction are clear.
  • Every keyboard, tier, stand, bench, laptop, and module is shown.
  • Mono or stereo routing is explicit for each source.
