What the stage plot must show
A vocal microphone is both a physical object and an audio input. The plot communicates where the performer and stand belong; the input list communicates what the channel needs. Use the same label in both places so the venue can move from drawing to patch without translating names.
For each vocal position, show:
- performer name or role;
- exact stage position from the performer’s perspective;
- microphone label and input number;
- stand type and boom direction when it affects the setup;
- nearby wedge or IEM destination and mix ID;
- any instrument, pedalboard, tablet, or lyric stand sharing the position;
- cable route or wireless note when it affects movement or changeover.
Relative placement is usually more useful than invented measurements. If the lead vocalist needs a two-metre clear movement area, say so and dimension it. If the singer simply stands downstage centre, use the grid and a clear label rather than claiming false precision.
The drawing should remain readable when printed. Keep the mic symbol beside the performer, not directly under the performer icon or wedge. A simple legend can distinguish wired vocal microphones, wireless handhelds, and headset systems.
Name vocal channels clearly
Avoid labels such as Vocal 1, Vocal 2, and Vocal 3 when the crew cannot tell who uses them. Stable, human-readable source names are easier to call during line check and less likely to drift when the lineup changes.
Good labels combine a person or role with the source:

Keep the same spelling on the plot, input list, monitor notes, console file notes, and show-advance correspondence. If Maya moves from stage right to centre, update the position without renaming the source. Choose and document the stand
“Mic stand” is not a complete request. Stand choice affects performer access, instrument clearance, sightlines, stability, and changeover.

Request a functional type before a brand unless a specific stand is genuinely necessary. A keyboard player may need a boom that reaches over two tiers without blocking controls. A singing drummer may need a boom positioned away from stick movement. A vocalist who removes the mic from the clip may prefer a stable straight stand with an appropriate clip.
Show the boom orientation when it affects adjacent equipment. Do not draw a boom across a keyboard, cymbal, access route, or another performer’s space. State who provides special clips, tablet mounts, drink holders, or other attachments; the venue should not discover a nonstandard thread or clamp during setup.
Wired and wireless microphone details
Wired vocal microphones
For a wired microphone, identify the preferred model or a clear functional alternative, provider, stand, and input. If the artist carries the microphone, say whether the artist also carries its clip and cable. If the venue provides it, distinguish preferred from required and explain any narrow requirement.
A dynamic handheld is common for live vocals, but microphone choice depends on the voice, stage level, monitoring, handling, and production. Do not claim that one model is universally best. Let the responsible engineer approve substitutions that meet the agreed need.
Wireless handhelds and headsets
A wireless request needs more than the word “wireless.” Record:
- microphone or capsule type;
- handheld, bodypack, headset, or lavalier format;
- receiver output and patch destination;
- who supplies receiver, transmitter, capsule, antennas, batteries, and spares;
- tuning range or exact equipment identification;
- frequency-coordination contact;
- receiver and antenna location;
- backup plan if the assigned system cannot be used.
Frequencies must be coordinated for the venue, date, and local rules. Do not publish a fixed frequency in a reusable rider and assume it is available everywhere. Give the wireless inventory to production during the advance, then record the confirmed show-specific assignment separately.
If wireless movement is not essential, a wired microphone can be simpler and more dependable. If wireless is show-critical, plan an appropriate spare or agreed wired fallback and make the changeover method clear.
Connect vocals to monitor mixes
The plot should place the performer’s wedge or identify the IEM destination using a stable mix ID. The monitor table then describes what that performer needs to hear. This link matters because the microphone, loudspeaker position, and desired monitor level form one working system.
For each vocalist, document:
- wedge, wired IEM, or wireless IEM destination;
- mono or stereo format;
- mix number and performer name;
- priority sources, including the performer’s own vocal;
- talkback, click, cue, or ambience needs;
- artist- and venue-supplied equipment.
Avoid promises about feedback performance. Mic choice, placement, room acoustics, stage volume, processing, and performer technique all matter. Give the engineer accurate positions and preferences, then allow the system to be tuned safely on site.

The 48V entry describes the input device, not every microphone category. Many common dynamic handheld microphones do not require phantom power; some active devices do. Common mistakes
Showing singers but not microphone inputs
A performer icon does not tell the engineer whether the vocalist needs a wired mic, wireless handheld, headset, stand, or input channel. Add the actual audio source.
Writing only a microphone brand or model
The crew still needs provider responsibility, stand type, stage position, input number, and substitution rules. A model name is one field, not the complete request.
Treating wireless as venue-default equipment
Many venues cannot provide an unplanned compatible wireless system. Confirm inventory, coordination, licensing, batteries, and backup before show day.
Changing names between documents
“Lead Vox” on the plot, “Maya” in the input list, and “Vocal 1” in the monitor notes can become three apparently different sources. One stable name prevents that ambiguity.
Ignoring the physical stand footprint
Tripod legs, long booms, pedalboards, wedges, and keyboard stands compete for the same floor area. Draw the real relationship and keep exits and working paths clear.
